Tu Publishing, a multicultural fantasy and science fiction press for children and young adults, needs your help to get started. In order to launch the press, Editorial Director Stacy Whitman has set up a kickstart funds drive to raise money from contributors like you and me. In order to help her reach her goals, this community has been formed to auction off items, services, crafts, and other various and sundry offerings, with all the proceeds going to the Tu kickstart page. We hope to help Stacy and Tu reach the goal of $10,000 by December 14th.

How can you help?

1) Donate something to our auction.
2) Bid on something donated to our auction.
3) Spread the word! Get lovers of fantasy and science fiction to pop by!

Here's how it works:

First: join or watch the community. People who want to make donations should request to join. If you just want to bid on the auctions, click "watch."
Second: if you have something to donate, post! As soon as your post goes up, the auction is live. Title your post with the name of the object or service you're contributing.
Third: if you want to bid on an item, post in the comments.
Fourth: keep track of your items and bids! Check back to see if you're winning (or if you want to increase your bid to stay in the lead).
Fifth: if you win an auction, make the pledged donation to the Tu Publishing Kickstart page and send the receipts to the contributor who donated the item.
Sixth: if you're a contributor and someone wins your auction, make sure to post the winner in the comments and add the word "ENDED" in front of the subject.

Edit: Because of the nature of the kickstart funding, if the total isn't met, all funds are refunded to the contributors. Due to that factor, all donors to the auction should wait on shipping any items to the winner of the auction until we've confirmed that the kickstart funding is going through. This means that, if you pledge money through kickstart for an auction item, but have that money refunded, you will not receive your auction item. Seem fair to everyone?

Edit #2: The kickstart fund raising ends on December 14 at 1 a.m. To make sure that all donations get in on time, all auction winners must be announced by December 9th. That gives people time to make sure their donations get in to kickstart and get resolved before the drive is over! Auction donors can put up an earlier end to the auction if they want to do so -- just make sure you state the end date in your initial entry!

Thank you so much for your support!

Nov. 29th, 2009 @ 10:09 am Phantom Rider trilogy by Janni Lee Simner (out of print children's books)
This is an auction for signed copies of my first three children's books, all now out of print. The Phantom Rider trilogy includes Ghost Horse, The Haunted Trail, and Ghost Vision, books in which I shamelessly indulge both a love of horses and a love of the Arizona desert.

Published in 1996, these Scholastic paperback editions have some spine and edge wear, and the pages are yellowed, but they remain quite readable, and I'll personalize them all.

Bidding starts at $10, and will close at midnight eastern standard time December 8.

Should kickstarter funding not be reached, auction winner may, if they wish, either donate to Tu Publishing directly (if this remains an option) or to Donors Choose to receive books.

Nov. 28th, 2009 @ 11:47 pm Spread the Word
We haven't had a new auction post in a couple of days, but bidding is still going on! I'd like to throw out the idea to all our members and watchers of thinking of the auction items as possible holiday gifts. What writer in your life would love a pro critique? Who needs an extra set of mugs? Some of the items obviously won't make it before the holidays, but others will be available (or will be great IOUs for the future, ready to fill a pretty envelope among the other gifts). Not only that, but the gift also comes with the good karma of donating to a great cause!

So, spread the word! Holiday shop at the Kickstart Tu Auction!

Nov. 20th, 2009 @ 10:10 pm Up for Auction: a video made from your photos
I make videos out of pictures and movie clips by putting them together in a creative order on top of a background song that relates to the pictures. This is not just a slide show, it's a mini movie. I am offering a video made from your pictures (I can use pictures from a flickr account, or somewhere else) put together on top of a matching song. If you like, you can choose the song (though if I don't own it, I'll request it emailed to me) and I will arrange your pictures into a movie over the song. I will than burn it onto a CD and mail you the movie, unless you would like to receive it through another method.

Here is an example of what I can do:

Opening bid: $5

Auction closes by 5pm Dec 9, PST.

Nov. 19th, 2009 @ 02:16 pm Up for Auction: Alice in Wonderland Crochet Doll
Stacy was the editor of my first book, Bronze Dragon Codex. I'm honored to have a chance to help her and Tu Publishing.

I'm auctioning an Alice in Wonderland doll, crocheted by yours truly. The doll is about 5" in height and one I made can be pictured here.

Now, once the winner is announced, there will be a delay in delivery. This is because I need to make the doll. Why am I not making the doll beforehand? Well, in the spirit of Tu Publishing's multi-cultural bent, this Alice will be made to YOUR specification. So if you ever wanted an Alice of another color, here's your chance! You can specify eye, hair, and skin color (dress too, if you don't care for Alice in blue). I am, of course, limited by the color availability of crochet thread, but I'll come as close as possible.

Bidding starts at $10 and closes at Midnight PST December 9, 2009.

Nov. 19th, 2009 @ 10:02 am Up for Auction: A YEAR of advertising on YA Books Central!
Okay, I've personally supported Tu Publishing with a donation. And I've offered up an auction for a critique (see below). I was wondering what else I could do...and here's my idea.

What you're bidding on...a full YEAR of banner advertising on www.yabookscentral.com YA (& Kids!) Books Central, one of the largest teen lit sites on the Internet today. The site receives over 400,000 pageviews a month (hits are in the millions). Perfect for authors or publishers. You can even send me a new banner every month, so you've got the potential of having 12 different ads over the course of the year. Advertising will start in January 2010 and go through December 2010. While I am thinking of revamping the advertising rate schedule, right now this would cost you $50 a month, so the total value of this is $600.00

Bidding starts at $20. Auction will end on December 8th, so the winner can be posted on December 9th.

The one caveat: advertising must be related in some way to the mission of the website (i.e. books, authors, review websites, etc.) and be rated for a general audience (no viagra ads, people). Ads must be acceptable to YABC.

If you have any question or would like to run an ad campaign by me before bidding, just ask!

UPDATE: Oh, and if you need help creating your banners? I'll help with that too. :-)

And do check out the other auctions and the Auction Rules! :-) http://community.livejournal.com/kickstart_tu/

I'm so excited about Stacy's project! I'm offering up for bid a 10 page novel critique or an entire short story. C'mon, people! Support multicultural books!

Besides being an author, I've also interned at a small press. Like Tiffany, I'll also help with a query letter for the winning bidder.

Auction will close on December 8th so the winner can be announced December 9th.

If you have any questions, please post a comment. Thank you for supporting Tu Publishing (and hey, consider donating anyway)!
